The events of Excubitor unfold in 2182 in a distant colonized star system. At its center lies Baphomet, a "hypergiant" star a thousand times larger than the Sun. Dozens, if not hundreds, of planets revolve around it. There used to be even more of them, but the star grows for hundreds of millions of years and absorbs them one by one. In this star system, a mysterious and powerful element is scattered across dozens of worlds, which could forever provide humanity with energy.
