The game takes place around 10,000 BC during the beginning of the Mesolithic era in the fictional area of Urus, where tribes have to come into conflict with nature and each other every day to survive. The player assumes the role of a hunter named Takkar, he is one of the last representatives of the destroyed tribe, who travels through the country of Urus in search of revenge for his people.

Since Far Cry Primal takes place in prehistoric times, the modern weapons and vehicles common to the Far Cry series of games are not present in the game. Only melee weapons are available to players: spears, clubs, and short-range weapons such as bows. However, there is no way to buy it, players will have to create weapons themselves using improvised items such as wood and stone. As they progress in the game, they will be able to upgrade their weapons, making them more deadly and effective.

In addition to clubs, spears, and bows, Takkar can use a variety of tamed animals against enemies, including saber-toothed tigers, cave bears, and wolves. The tame owl serves as Takkar´s scout, allowing him to detect enemies from afar. If one of Takkar´s pets dies, it can be brought back to life by finding and using the Red Leaf. Takkar leads the lifestyle of a Stone Age man: he hunts animals, makes tools from various materials, and also wages war with other tribes. In the country of Urus, there are different regions with different climates and different dangers for the player — for example, in snowy, cold areas, Takkar can freeze and must keep warm by the fire, or make warm clothes, or hug a mammoth or a tiger.

To fully immerse yourself in the world of the game, all dialogues are written in a primitive language based on Proto-Indo-European. They are supplemented with subtitles.
