Description:
The Byzantine empire of the beginning of the XI century is in a strong position - they pushed their border east of the fragmented Muslim emirates and completely destroyed the Bulgars in the Balkans. Everything changed in 1071, when they suffered a catastrophic defeat from the Seljuk Turks in the battle of Mancickert. These nomadic conquerors recently turned to Islam and quickly installed a sultanate ruling from Afghanistan to Palestine. Following the Manzicyrt, they took almost the whole of Anatoly from the Byzantines. When the Byzantine emperor Aleksios Komnenos with all his might tried to stop the offensive of the Seljuks, he turned to the West for the mercenaries. Papa Urban II grabbed this request, who, perhaps, saw in her an opportunity to achieve his own goals. At the Cathedral in Clermone in 1095, he called for a crusader to save the eastern churches and return the Holy Land from Muslims. It was successful, since the powerful empire of the Seljuki began to break up, the Sultanate Rum in Anatoly (modern Asian Turkey) separated from the Great Empire 1077, and local Syrian atabugs in practice turned out to be semi -dependent and disassembled. The first crusade ultimately captured Jerusalem in 1099 and founded a number of crusaders in Palestine and Syria. Thus, they caused a fierce hostility between Muslims, Western Christians and Byzantines, which led to two -century conflicts. The first to follow several large crusades, since the Crusaders states fought for their existence against a number of revived Islamic states: Fatimids, Zangids, Ayyubids and, finally, Mamlyukov, who in 1291 destroyed the last stronghold of the crusaders in Acko. Time, a much greater threat of Islamic civilization arose further to the east. The rapidly growing Mongols destroyed the Khorezmi Shahd by 1231, the Christian kingdom of Georgia fell in 1239, and the Seljuks were defeated and forced to become vassals in 1243. By 1258, the Assassins of Alamut and the ruins of the once great caliphate of Abbasids were also conquered. Only the Mamluks of Egypt were able to finally put the end of the Mongol on their victory at Ain-Jalut in 1260. On the Balkans, the Byzantine empire remained strong until 1204, when Constantinople fell during the fourth Crusade. After that, most of the old empire was captured by the Western crusaders and Venetians, who led all this vile enterprise. The Byzantines lasted four fragments: the Trapezund and Nicaean Empires and the despotates of Rhodes and Epirus. In the end, the Nicaean Empire returned Constantinople in 1261, but the power of the Byzantines was forever broken, and now they were only a secondary state.
