In June 1997, a delegation of the Chechen parliament handed over to the leaders of the Lithuanian Sejm (parliament) an appeal from the President of Chechnya with a request to recognize the independence of the Chechen Republic. Similar appeals were also submitted to the parliaments of Latvia and Estonia. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned these republics "about extremely negative consequences" for bilateral relations in the event of a positive decision to appeal to the President of Chechnya.
