Battlefield 3 includes both a single and co-op campaign and a multiplayer mode (multiplayer). The multiplayer is reminiscent of its predecessor from Battlefield 2.

Fighters returned as guided vehicles, and the prone position became available again. The maximum number of players in a multiplayer game on the PC version is 64. On the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, only 24 players can play on the server.[7] The gameplay video confirmed that the player will be able to drag the fighters into cover and heal them there. However, this feature has not been ported to multiplayer. The game uses a brand new engine called Frostbite 2, which is the successor to the Frostbite Engine used in the Bad Company series.[3]

Thanks to the Frosbite 2 engine, the game features Destruction 3.0. Unlike Destruction 2.0 from Bad Company 2, Destruction 3.0 allows you to destroy much larger objects and makes this process more realistic. For example, in the trailer for Fault Line - Episode 2: Great Target, when the player fires the AT4 at the hotel wall, the front of the building can be seen to completely collapse. Also, in the seismically unstable city of Sulaymaniyah, players can observe tremors and earthquakes.

Sounds are another important part of the game. They are so detailed that the player can, for example, tell by the sound of the tank whether it is moving towards the player or away from the player, or has difficulty driving uphill. The developers recorded the sounds of vehicles and weapons in real military exercises. Their goal was to create "clear and high-quality sound".[8] The soundtrack is extremely varied. As Thomas Danko, DICE voice-over producer, stated, “There is no shooter in the world with a lot of recorded voice-overs for an online game. We have recorded more than 300 variants of “enemy killed” alone.”[9]
