The BR Heavy Freight Pack add-on combines two iconic diesel locomotives: the Class 40, one of the first mass-produced diesel-electric locomotives of British Railways, and the BR Class 08, perhaps one of the most widely used diesel-electric locomotives in Britain. This set of two locomotives adds heavy haulage to the Northern Trans-Pennine line with historic rolling stock. Experience a bygone era of freight transport, moving thousands of tons of fuel and cargo along the steep slopes of the Pennine Mountains. In total, 200 diesel locomotives have been built by English Electric in the four years since 1958, nicknamed "Whistler" (from English Whistler - Whistler). They received this nickname for the whistling sound of a turbocharger, and for some time were considered the pride of the British Rail diesel locomotive fleet. Despite the mixed success of the first 10 Class 40 prototypes, BR ordered another 190 such locomotives. The construction methods of these diesel locomotives changed, so different batches of Whistlers were delivered with significant design differences. Class 08 was a universal locomotive for all occasions, with almost all shunting work in freight fleets and at stations being performed by Gronk. Nearly 1,000 units have been built at factories in Derby, Crewe, Darlington, Doncaster and Horwich in the ten-year period since 1952, making the Class 08 the largest of the BR diesel locomotive series.
