Microsoft Windows Remote Desktop Services RDS CALs – terminal client licenses that enable secure remote user connections, access from managed or unmanaged devices, connection to session-based or virtual machine desktops, and use of data center applications on corporate networks or from the Internet .

An RDS CAL is required for each user or device that connects to the remote desktop session host. The RDS Licensing Server is required to install, issue, and monitor RDS CALs.

When a user or device connects to a Remote Desktop Session Host server, the Remote Desktop Session Host server determines whether a Remote Desktop Services CAL is required.
